The focus at our Australian operations has been on supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community. AngloGold Ashanti Australia has introduced internal educational initiatives on LGBTQIA+ issues and participated in the Perth Pride Parade in 2019.

Our operations

AngloGold Ashanti has two operations in Australia, Sunrise Dam and Tropicana, both of which are in the north-eastern goldfields of the state of Western Australia.

Sunrise Dam, which is wholly owned by AngloGold Ashanti, is located 55km south of Laverton in the northern goldfields of Western Australia. In over 20 years of uninterrupted gold production, the operation has produced more than 8.5Moz of gold. Underground mining is now the primary source of ore following the completion of the open pit in 2014.

Tropicana is a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti, which holds 70% and is manager, and Regis Resources Ltd, which holds 30%. Located 330km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, it is a large-scale open pit operation with a modern processing facility. The Boston Shaker underground mine at Tropicana began commercial production in September 2020.

Australian legislation

In Australia, AngloGold Ashanti operates in compliance with several critical pieces of legislation. These include: The Fair Work Act 2009, the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986, the Age Discrimination Act 2004, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, the Workplace Gender Equity Act 2012 and the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.

Key initiatives

For the past 10 years, AngloGold Ashanti Australia has been a supporter of the Women in Mining WA (WIMWA) Mentoring Programme, with approximately 60 of our female team members mentored through this programme over the years. We also participate annually in the WIMWA Summit.

In 2019, AngloGold Ashanti Australia formed its own Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The committee has over 50 members, and has visible leadership and support from the Senior Vice President: Australia and other member of the Australian Regional Leadership Team. The committee is founded on three primary pillars:

  • 01

Learning and development: Providing learning and opportunities for employees to build a diverse and inclusive workplace

  • 02

AngloGold Ashanti Australia community: Fostering a caring community where everyone feels welcome and included

  • 03

Leadership and strategy: Reflecting AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s leadership through decisions and actions made to support diversity and inclusion initiatives

The team’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee has learnt that visible leadership from the senior executive team is vital in ensuring the success of the committee’s activities. And while the ideas for various diversity and inclusion initiatives come from the committee, they are ultimately driven by the business as a whole.

Projects range from the recognition of cultural events and days, through to policy development and strategically targeted recruitment campaigns. The team also participated in the Perth Pride Parade in 2019, and sponsored and participated in a LGBTQIA+ mentoring programme. Work towards an Ally Programme is underway, which promotes understanding the business case for LGBTQIA+ inclusion, learning about the lived experiences of LTBTQIA+ people, and exploring actions that individuals can take to ensure a more inclusive workplace culture.

Opportunities for further inclusion

Inclusivity has been a primary focus of the committee, with the belief that creating an inclusive culture is key to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce.
